Tax Guide: Italy
What happens if you exceed the flat-rate regime limit?
In Italy, the limit for the flat-rate regime is €85,000. If you exceed this threshold during the calendar year, but remain below €100,000, you will leave the flat-rate regime starting from the following calendar year, switching to the ordinary regime. Attention: if you exceed €100,000 during the current calendar year, the exit from the flat-rate regime is immediate (retroactive from the transaction that exceeded the threshold) and you will have to apply ordinary invoicing and VAT accounting for the entire affected year. Use this tool to monitor your progress month by month and avoid an unexpected exit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens strictly when I cross the limit?
In most European countries, crossing the simplified regime threshold means you lose your VAT exemption status. You typically must register for a VAT number within a specified timeframe (sometimes immediately), start charging VAT to your clients, and file regular VAT returns.
Can I transition back to the simplified regime?
Yes, but conditions apply. If your revenues fall below the threshold in the following calendar year, many countries allow you to revert to the simplified regime at the start of the next fiscal year, but you usually must manually request this change from your local tax office.
